Anytime an individual decides to cease using drugs or alcohol there are accompanying physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms and in regards to cocaine detox the psychological withdrawal effects are greater than the physical. Cocaine is a very addictive drug because it produces an intense energy soon after ingesting it as the brain releases higher than normal amounts of certain chemicals. When use is stopped, an immediate “crash” occurs and the individual feels the need for more cocaine.
Individuals addicted to cocaine become psychologically dependent on the euphoria and increased energy that accompanies a cocaine high. When entering a period of withdrawal, a person dependent on cocaine will appear fatigued, agitated and anxious. They realize that the only way to relieve these symptoms is to ingest more cocaine, either by smoking, inhaling or injecting it. In the case of cocaine there are really no limits for the addict in obtaining the substance because the psychological need is so great. Unlike alcohol where withdrawal is visible through shaking and vomiting, cocaine withdrawal is noted through an individual’s behaviors and thoughts. Unfortunately, when cocaine use is stopped and a person is suffering through the subsequent withdrawal, there are complications such as depression and suicide risk. The craving for the drug is so strong that getting through the related emotions may have detrimental psychological effects.
As symptoms of withdrawals begin to abate, it may become apparent that there are underlying psychological problems that are unresolved. If these problems are handled, then the chance for relapse is lessened as the individual learns to cope with daily life without the use of cocaine. Treatment at a traditional rehab, or at an alternative drug rehab center, is important during the process of withdrawal and recovery. Although the immediate physical symptoms may have ended, the psychological cravings and depression can linger for months. Depression can trigger many psychological symptoms and must therefore be treated very seriously.
